Chocolate for breakfast

December, a month where chocolate for breakfast suddenly becomes acceptable, if not expected. Days merge into one continuous cycle of food and Christmas television, generally with the odd recognition that maybe you should go out and get some air. Not however, for Easingwold Running Club, December signals the last month of the Club Championship and a busy period of events.

Event 15 saw 18 club members undertake the Whixley 10k. Catherine Howell-Walmsley ran home the fastest club female, completing the course in a time of 53:52, followed closely by Jane Maloney in a time of 54:37. Simon Donoghue took the spot of fastest club male with a time of 39:22, taking 2nd place overall.

24th October and it was event 16 the Leeds Abbey Dash, with 11 club members taking it on. The traditional road race terrain makes for a fast course and our club members are certainly testament to this. Not only were there some extremely fast times registered, but a number of new PB’s set. Samantha Davies completed the course in a time of 39:20. Simon Donoghue continued to set impressive times, finishing the race in a time of 38:18.

Event 17 and this time the club were in Tadcaster to take on a 10-mile road race. 14 members took on the challenge and again put in some extremely impressive performances. This time Craig Gath was the fastest male home in a time of 1:01:12, finishing in 28th position overall. He was followed by Julian Ollive in a time of 1:03:49 and Simon Donoghue in 1:04:08. Jane Maloney came in as the fastest club female, finishing 459th position with a time of 1:32:17. Lindsey Walker was next home in a time of 1:35:22, followed by Pam Johnson in 1:43:58.

On the 5th December, the championship events moved from the road to the mud, taking on the NYSD Cross Country Summerhill course. As you’d expect for an off-road event in December, it was a tough course, but 14 club members were more than a match for it. The ladies team finished in 8th position overall, with the men’s team finishing in 9th.

With 17 events now completed the club championship is nearing completion and final positions are starting to be cemented. Samantha Davies leads the females with a total point score of 400, followed closely by Jane Maloney with a total of 392 points. On the men’s side, Simon Donoghue leads the way with a total of 400 points, followed by Richard Knott in second position with a total of 370.
