Chair's Weekly Update

Preparations for our inaugural Easingwold 10k on the 27th July are going well and we have very nearly 400 entries now with reasonable confidence we will sell out at 500.

The organising team of Ray, Jason, Cheryl, Claire, Andy and Jo have worked really hard to cover the myriad of things to be done with the first edition of a closed roads, fully sponsored community race.

The majority of entries are from non running club participants, many of whom are running 10k for the first time including the group being coached to 10k on a Wednesday evening by John, Pippa, Sally-Anne and Cheryl.

It should be a great day with Junior parkrun before at 9am, the race at 10am and the family fun day running from 10am including games, food, DJ and music from The Mojo's. Prize giving will be at 11:30 in the Galtres Centre and we have lots of spot prizes as well as the trophies and prize money.

The event is a Club Championship event, many of you have entered and many of you not running have also volunteered to be Marshal, be lead cyclist etc, thank you for this. We do also need further help on the day with setting up, gazebo, barriers, signs, directing people, race control at the Galtres, dishing out the numbers. Then of course help would be appreciated taking everything back down. As you will appreciate there is a lot to do and please if you are able to join the team get in touch either by reply to this or email info.easingwold10k@gmail.com

The weather has cooled a little but I think it's fair to say we are going to face higher temps (and rainfall eventually) going forward and this has triggered a bit more research and understanding of safe running in higher temperatures by the coaching team.

Last week on Thursday we had a very enjoyable evening at Husthwaite hosted by the Cider Mill with 5 well planned routes available. Big thanks to Jane who made the arrangements and also to the leaders on the night who put some great routes on.

Saturday was the 6th anniversary parkrun at Millfield involving lots of members both as participants or volunteers including handing out cake! It was great to reflect on what has been achieved over the 6 years with regular attendance of well over 200 now building from the 111 who took part in Millfield parkrun #1. Many lives have been changed.

ERC has been central to this and it's been a wonderful journey. Results from ERC members at all parkruns last Saturday here

Also on Saturday when most of us were probably just having breakfast Sam Davies was setting off from Chamonix in France to take on the 23km with 1667 metres of height gain Du Mont-Blanc 2025 which she completed in 3 hrs 27 mins. It sounds like a great adventure in a lovely part of the world, well done Sam. Picture below

Sunday saw Cheryl, Sally_Anne and Pippa at the Hanging Stone Leap Half Marathon on a very warm day, well done to all 3 who ran together in the event from Guisborough Running Club and organised by Lets Run.

Meanwhile up in Scotland Harry Berger was in action and reports:-

"Having done many single day ultra races and events, there was one thing that had always intrigued me: the traditional English coast to coast route is 188 miles, thereby a multi-day event, so that was a no-no. But, the Highlands of Scotland are blessed with the narrowest point - a mere 36 miles from Ullapool on the West to Ardgay in the East. The North of Scotland LDWA decided to organise this as an event and on New Years Day, I entered. Much training has ensued, with the difficulty being the terrain: 3 miles tarmac/compact trail, followed by 23 miles of fell and trail, and the final 10 miles on tarmac. The event was yesterday and I ran for the majority of the route with Jon Steele (owner of Hardmoors) and Mick Cooper (a truly hardened multi-day runner and original holder of the record time on the Winter Spine). The LDWA don’t recognise winners and losers, but Jon, Mick and I were the first finishers out of 193, in a time of 7h 40m. I highly recommend the route, as this part of Scotland is simply stunning"

I think that was it for ERC participation in events last weekend? Do let me know if you are doing anything going forward which might be off radar and any pictures and reports would be greatly appreciated by members, it's good to share running experiences.

This week on Monday evening it was back to Alne for a very warm session led by John who took the high temps into account and tailored the training to suit. We are now able to store the kit at the field, thanks to APLA for allowing this which makes it easier for us.

Tuesday we were at Yearsley Woods for enjoyable tree shaded running and a bit cooler weather.

Hope to see you this evening at the Galtres where the coaching team have come up with two options - easy base runs or 400m intervals suitable for all. Take your pick, see you there.
